A fire that appears to have started in a whole-house fan Thursday morning temporarily displaced five people living in a north Modesto home.
The fire occurred shortly before noon on Somerset Drive, a few blocks east of College Avenue.
Firefighters contained the fire in the attic, where the fan was installed, said Fire Warden Ray Jackson of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority.
Whole-house fans are used to suck warm air out of a home.
The fire damaged a 6-by-6-foot space, he said, but firefighters had to tear down portions of the ceiling to extinguish the flames. Firefighters put tarps on furniture and other valuables to prevent water damage and had the fire under control in about 10 minutes, Jackson said.
The fire caused an estimated $15,000 in damage.
