Townsend Opera is accepting applications for this year's Kristina Townsend Memorial Vocal Competition, to be held Feb. 25 at California State University, Stanislaus.
The annual vocal competition honors the memory of Kristina Townsend, daughter of the company's late founder Erik Buck Townsend, who passed away of leukemia days before her 13th birthday.
Four age categories will be held in the competition, with a cash prize in each: $500 for age 22-25, $300 age 20-21, $200 age 18-19 and $100 age 15-17. Winners will sing at the Opera League Luncheon on March 17. The competition will be judged by Matthew Buckman, executive director of Townsend Opera; aritistic director Joseph Wiggett; and principal conductor Ryan Murray.
There is a $10 entry fee to audition. Applications are available at the Townsend Opera business office, 1214 11 St., Modesto; the Stanislaus State department of music in Turlock; Gottschalk's Music, 129 Burney, Modesto; and the Modesto Junior College department of music, 435 College Ave.
'Hamlet' at Stage 3
Stage 3 Theatre company in Sonora promises an "exciting and dangerous new interpretation of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" with its next production.
"Forget everything you think you know about Hamlet. Forget that this is the best known play of all time," the Stage 3 Web site instructs. "Drill right straight down to the very spine and marrow of the story. Find the beginning in the end. Find the roots through the branches."

Off the Air show
An new Off the Air musical event is planned Saturday at Deva Cafe in downtown Modesto. Scheduled in the all-ages show lineup are Davis group Shayna and the Bulldog, local band not an Airplane and Austin, Texas, group Agent Ribbons. The show is 8-11 p.m. at Deva, 1202 J St., Modesto. Tickets are $5.
Free membership
Memberships for the museum-without-walls-concept Modesto Art Museum are now free. Interested participants can receive a digital membership card by emailing modestoartmuseum@yahoo.com with a full name and zip code. Membership cards can be downloaded to a phone or printed out. Discounts or free admission to museum events and activities are available with the cards.
The Modesto Art Museum was founded in 2005 as a nonprofit educational corporation. It hosts opportunities to create and learn about art and to enjoy art created by others. No 'Beckfield' win
Beyer High student Drew Monson did not win the "Beckfield" mass participation Internet TV star contest. The competition Judge Jonathan Frakes ("Star Trek: The Next Generation") gave the grand prize of $10,000 and a trip for two to Hollywood to another contestant, Michael Town. "Beckenfield" is a science-fiction Internet series on www.theatrics.com where anyone can create a character and be part of the story. Monson, 16, submitted a video audition to be in a community theater play on the show and was selected as one of 18 finalists for the grand prize.
