If you're going to win your first major career title, you might as well make it a big one. Mike Fagan of Dallas won the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Masters at Sunset Station's Strike Zone Bowling Center in Las Vegas. He beat Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, 246-213. Fagan, a two-time Team USA member, earned $50,000 for his victory.
Barnes was hoping to become only the third player in PBA history to complete the career Grand Slam with wins at each of the PBA's four majors. Only two players have accomplished the grand slam Mike Aulby and Norm Duke.
This is the third time in the Masters that Barnes has seen his top seed advantage fade in the final game. He started with strikes in four of the first five frames then struggled through the fourth.
The United States Bowling Congress has voted in a new President, and the youngest ever, to fill the remainder of the term vacated earlier this month Jim Sturm. Andrew Cain, all of 30, will take over the reins of the 2 million-member organization until July 31.
Cain, who started bowling at age 6 and had his first 300 game at age 12, was a member of Team USA in 2002, 2003 and 2005 and was a member of Junior Team USA in 2001. He has won numerous medals in international competition, and most recently was a member of the Team All-Events champions at the 2011 USBC Open Championships. Cain is from Phoenix and graduated from Arizona State. Strum stepped down to take a position at Tri Properties Hotel and Casino in Reno as director of bowling operations. He'll try to bring more bowling events to Reno's National Bowling Stadium.
