-- Workers have cleared a rock slide on the road connecting Highway 120 with Yosemite Valley and it is expected to be open this morning.

Yosemite National Park announced the reopening nearly a week after a storm sent the rock tumbling onto Big Oak Flat Road.

The road will reopen with a gravel surface and will close temporarily at times next week to allow for paving. Those times have not been announced.

"This opening is a testament to the efficiency and fortitude of our roads and trails crew," park superintendent Don Neubacher said in a news release Friday.

Yosemite Valley has been accessible via Highway 140 from Merced and Highway 41 from Fresno.

The loss of the Highway 120 connection made Yosemite less convenient for Modesto-area residents. It also threatened a loss of business for Tuolumne County's tourism sector, which already has been dealing with a late start to the snow season.

Badger Pass in Yosemite and Dodge Ridge near Pinecrest opened this week, joining ski areas that had opened earlier because of snow-making equipment.
