Construction is under way on an $18.5 million project to retrofit the Science I building at California State University, Stanislaus, in Turlock.

The state approved the two-year project in 2010, but the money wasn't available until last year.

The 51,000-square-foot Science I building is 40 years old and has not been widely used since the university opened the Naraghi Hall of Science in 2007.

Retrofitting, here being done by construction workers Thursday, is necessary to bring the building up to earthquake safety codes.

When complete, the building will house classrooms and offices, as well as serving as the home of the university's nursing program.
