When The Bee described Brad Hawn as someone who "prides himself on working with groups behind the scenes to deal with problems and advance initiatives in the community" (Jan. 15, Page B-1), I cringed! It reminded me of the many unsatisfactory and frustrating experiences I had with Brad when he was the president of the Central California Art Association/Mistlin Gallery.

I am a professional artist who was a CCAA member during Brad's presidency there. Brad's idea of leadership is guileful maneuvering of people and circumstances to achieve his personal agenda. As president, Brad used evasive and deceptive tactics to maintain control. This included bylaw changes without membership vote; financial reports not delivered or incomprehensible; and elections not held as required by the bylaws. The CCAA/Mistlin Gallery exists today only because of Tony Mistlin's generosity and the hard work of dedicated artists who continue to volunteer.

Modesto needs a mayor who will work with our city's staff and diverse population in a transparent manner. We need a leader with effective communication skills who will work hard to improve the quality of life for all residents. Please join me in voting for Garrad Marsh for mayor.
