-- The Modesto Police Department has partnered with a mapping Website to offer residents access to daily crime data, so they can pinpoint burglaries, vehicle thefts and even frauds reported in their neighborhoods.

The department joined with crimemapping.com to provide the crime data online. The Web site is a nationwide public mapping service that allows the public to analyze interactive maps of recent crime activity.

The service also partners with the Merced, Tracy and Stockton police departments.

The mapping service allows residents to map recent crimes and view reports concerning crimes occurring near their home, place of business or their child’s school.

Each reported crime has a corresponding icon. Clicking on the icon reveals detailed information including the type of crime, a case number, time and location.

Modesto police enlisted the service to support community-oriented policing, which is based on working together with residents, schools, businesses, faith-based organizations and other community groups. Officials hope to empower the public with daily-updated crime information.

The mapping service offers e-mail subscriptions. Residents can receive e-mailed crime alerts when an incident is reported in their area.

Users can also search for incidents by typing in an address, a crime type and date. The data posted on the Web site is pulled from Modesto police records every 24-hours.

Crimemapping.com also is available on mobile devices and can be accessed via a free application called Crimemapping.com Mobile for the iPhone.
