SCHOOL: Beyer High

GRADE: Junior

ON THE COURT: The three-time defending Modesto Metro Conference has not lost a regular-season match, with her three high school defeats coming in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 Tournament. Jacques reached the quarterfinals as a sophomore, and advance to the semifinals this season. She is among the best in Northern California in her age group, and is already getting recruiting pitches from colleges. After going 20-1 as a sophomore, Jacques posted a 22-1 record this season. She’ll face some new competition next fall, though, when sister Simone arrives at Beyer to compete for the tennis team. Simone is an eighth-grader at Somerset Middle School. Her coaches are Steve Clark (Beyer) and Mike Irwin (club).

OFF THE COURT: Jacques carries a 4.0 grade-point average and was in three Advanced Placement courses during the fall semester — psychology, biology and pre-calculus. The courses are designed to prep students for college-level work, and require a great deal more commitment than standard classes. Jacques manages to find time for a boyfriend and to attend events such as Beyer’s winter formal, coinciding with her desire to be more than merely a tennis player.

LOOKING AHEAD: The goal has always been to parlay her tennis skills into a college scholarship, Jacques says, with an eye toward eventually going to medical school. She’s been hearing a lot from Annapolis, but her first choice would be to attend a West Coast school. Her desire for medical school is in part because her parents are registered nurses.

QUOTABLE: “I’m excited about my sister coming to Beyer in the fall, because it means another Jacques will be playing tennis after I graduate and go to college. My sister probably she thinks she’s better than I am, so we’ll have fun playing next season. I’m glad we’re going to have a year together.”
