In the summer of 2002, Debbie Greco of Modesto was diagnosed with pelvic cancer.
"I had surgery in August, but in November, tests showed the cancer had spread to my bladder, small intestine and a spot on my liver," she said. "I was told that high-dose chemo was an option, but even if it worked, it would merely shrink the tumors or slow their growth, but would not make them go away."
Greco was told she might survive for a year.
She was ill and had a fever every day for the next month. Her weight dropped to 84 pounds.
"A week before Christmas, I prayed with a picture of Mother Teresa that was taken with Father (Joseph) Illo when he was in Calcutta in April 1997," Greco said. "Over the next few weeks, I noticed that my energy had returned and my fevers had stopped."
In January 2003, she returned to the doctor, who order a PET scan.
"It revealed no sign of cancer," she said. "I have been cancer-free ever since."
