SANTA ROSA -- Beating Santa Rosa twice in one year proved a daunting task for the Modesto Junior College women's soccer team.
The only team to top Santa Rosa this season, the Pirates came up short in the NorCal semifinals, losing 4-2.
"This is a great team and I am sad to see it break up," MJC coach Steve Aristotelous said. "They are all quality people."
Modesto trailed 3-0 when Sara Latham scored five minutes before halftime. Yosselin Alvarado pulled the Pirates within a goal in the 57th minute. Aristotelous said the Pirates played aggressively up front, but were not able to score again.
"Even though we lost, I am very proud of the comeback effort the players made," coach Steve Aristotelous said. "Ninety nine percent of teams would've quit when trailing to the No. 1 team in the tournament 3-0."
Tianna Wehby had eight saves for Modesto. Mariela Pimentel and Yajahira Valdivia each had an assist.
