— The victim in Modesto’s most recent pedestrian fatality was identified Monday as 42-year-old Shu Xing Cheng.

Cheng was hit by a car while crossing Standiford Avenue east of Carver Road at about 10:45 p.m. Friday.

She was taken to a nearby hospital and died from her injuries.

Cheng was from China but had been living in Modesto for about two months on a work visa, according to Lt. Rick Armendariz. She worked at a local massage studio.

Cheng’s family has been notified and is traveling from China to Modesto to recover Cheng’s body, Armendariz said.

Cheng and another woman were walking along the south side of Standiford when they decided to cross the street and head north near Longbridge Drive. Cheng was not in a cross walk when she was hit by a car traveling west on Standiford. Her friend was not injured.

Traffic officers are still looking for witnesses and have not determined who is at fault, although the driver has not been cited.

Drugs or alcohol did not appear to have been a factor in the incident.
