Riverbank singer Marirose won two awards at the 21st annual Los Angeles Music Awards best female vocalist and best Americana, blues and roots single for her song "Hiding Me."
In her second year being nominated, the wins were her first. She and the other 29 award winners were selected by industry judges and audience members at voting parties held earlier in the year in Los Angeles. There were five nominees in each category.
Marirose received the awards Nov. 10 at a red-carpet ceremony at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood, where "The Lawrence Welk Show" was filmed. She performed the winning song for 1,000 people in attendance, booked as a replacement for another artist who had backed out. She also got her first taste of the paparazzi.
"That was amazing," she said. "It was a wall of photographers. They were stacked four high. They must have been standing on a step or something. They were from eye level up."
A nurse practitioner, Marirose performs frequently around the valley with her band, the Gypsies. The band's third album, "Under My Skin," was produced by Michael Klooster, keyboardist in the multiplatinum-selling band Smash Mouth. She isn't the only Central Valley artist to be involved with the LA Music Awards. Last year, Riverbank folk singer Rachel Renae was nominated.
Marirose said she was a little bit disappointed in the music awards ceremony because it was rushed. While she was able to go on stage and pose for a photo, not all of the winners were given that opportunity because one acceptance speech ran too long. She also wasn't able to take home a trophy because it wasn't ready yet. Her photo was taken with a model of the gold-plated guitar pick.
But she was happy with the experience overall and said it was the biggest honor to date that she has had with her music. "It was great," the singer/songwriter said. "It was so exciting. It's going to look good on the résumé."
