Todd Aaronson conceded Friday to Modesto Councilman Dave Lopez; no leads changed in major races throughout Stanislaus County as election workers nearly completed counting 15,000 ballots that could not be processed Tuesday.
Solange Altman, who trailed Amy Neumann by 98 votes on Election Day, closed to within 22 when updated counts were posted
late Thursday. They are vying for a third seat on the Modesto City Schools board; Cathy Flores Hallinan and Steve Grenbeaux won the two other seats.
"Whether it's me or Amy I think she would do a great job as well. She has children in the system and I did," Altman said. "It's almost like we're bookends; she's still in the process and I'm on the other side. I'm going to feel good about it no matter what."
No votes were tallied Friday in observance of Veterans Day; counting of about 800 remaining ballots will resume Monday.
Aaronson was 184 votes behind Lopez on Election Day and trailed by 174 Thursday with a small but unknown number of ballots remaining from central Modesto.
"District 3 voters have made their decision, and I look forward to working with our newly elected representative," Aaronson said in a written statement.
John Gunderson's lead over Philip Moyer in District 1 increased from 137 votes to 279.
David Collins won the first of two seats in the Sylvan Union School District. Jennifer Miyakawa's 112-vote lead over Chuck Rivera for the second seat had grown to 186 votes in the latest count.
Only 34 votes separate Mike Kline and Ceres Councilman Guillermo Ochoa, who trailed Kline by 91 on Tuesday. Each hopes to secure a second seat behind Councilman Bret Durossette.
Eric Ingwerson's 121-vote lead over Linda Ryno for a two-year Ceres seat grew to 147 votes.
In races for three seats on the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District board, Roselee Hurst and Laura Elkinton are locked in a tie for third behind Tim Bazar and Janice Conforti. Hurst had been 10 votes ahead of Elkinton on Tuesday.
Lopez said he never broke stride, attending a Veterans Day parade Friday and other city meetings since Election Day. Former Mayor Carmen Sabatino and Paul Tunison finished third and fourth, respectively.
"I'm excited and also humbled and honored to go back to work," Lopez said. Continuing his focus on rallying volunteers, Lopez said he's nearly ready to launch an alley cleanup effort.
In other contests:
A single vote separates Sherron McCarthy from Kym Cassaretto for a second seat behind Maureen McKibban in the Knights Ferry School District. Things had not changed since Election Day, when Cassaretto trailed McCarthy by one vote with 156 total counted, compared with 227 tallied by Thursday.
Thomas Freeman trails Jeff McKay by 32 votes for a second seat in the Stanislaus Union School District, behind Susan Elliott. Mc- Kay was leading Freeman by 41 votes Tuesday.
In the Keyes Community Services District, Casey Chadwick slipped from the top spot Tuesday to second on Thursday, trailing Mike Bernal by two votes and leading Roberto Jimenez by 21 votes for a second seat. On Election Day, Jimenez was 28 votes behind Bernal.
Positions did not change in a five-person race for three seats in the Salida Sanitary District, with Donna Murphy in front followed by Brad Johnson and Gary Horton. But Chris Reyes, who trailed Horton by 21 votes Tuesday, closed to within 14 in the latest count.
Other relatively close races with margins expanded from Tuesday to Thursday:
In the Patterson Joint Unified School District, Alex Saballos and Elisa Pinedo-Medina were tied Tuesday for fifth in a race for four seats with both only five votes behind the fourth candidate. By Thursday, Pinedo-Medina was down by seven votes and Saballos, by 15. Apparent victors are Kay Silva Johnson, Bruce Kelly, Amy Hussar and Jose Reynoso.
In the Valley Home Joint School District, Don Taro trailed by nine votes Tuesday in the fourth position for three seats, but now is 38 votes behind.
Steve Prevostini trailed Daniel Robinson by only three votes for a Patterson Irrigation District seat on Tuesday, with only 19 total votes cast. On Thursday, the total had grown to 45 votes, with Prevostini losing by five.
Jeanette Stearns was behind Kathy Hankins by eight votes on Tuesday, and by 14 votes on Thursday, for a second full-term seat
in the Empire Sanitary District , behind Thomas Burns. L.B. Haney captured one of two seats for a short term; Louise Little's 22-vote lead over Ruth Sharp grew to 24 votes by Thursday.
