The Yosemite chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will recognize eight people and companies Tuesday, which is National Philanthropy Day. Awards will be presented as part of the noon meeting of the Modesto Rotary Club.
"With losses in federal funding and increased community need, charities have to rely more and more on individual contributions," committee chairman Monica Ojcius said. "Our nominees have made the commitment to support philanthropy in Stanislaus County and keep the spirit of civic betterment alive and strong."
The honorees:
Outstanding philanthropists: Jeani and John Ferrari for their gift to Emanuel Medical Center for cardiovascular services, which inspired volunteers and donors to surpass a $1 million goal in six weeks.
Outstanding volunteer fund-raiser: Tom Van Groningen, who has volunteered for many causes, including Bethany Home Foundation, Community Hospice, The Salvation Army and the Gallo Center for the Arts.
Outstanding youth philanthropist: Craig Jones, a senior at Central Catholic High School, who has volunteered for the Society for the Handicapped, Modesto Gospel Mission, Haven Women's Center and the Redwood Center.
Outstanding fund-raising professional: Julie De Araujo, who created the development department at Bethany Home, an elder care group in Ripon, and began the Ripon Senior Meals Program and other community fund-raising endeavors.
Outstanding corporate donor: Hilmar Cheese Co., another major contributor to Emanuel Medical Center.
Outstanding small-business donor: For more than 25 years, Directline Technologies, owned by Gary and Martha Conner, has made significant contributions to the Gallo Center for the Arts, Modesto Symphony, The Salvation Army and Rotary International.
Outstanding philanthropic foundation, service organization or nonprofit: The Bright Family Foundation, led by Calvin Bright, assists groups ranging from the Boy Scouts to the University of California at Merced.
Lifetime achievement in philanthropy: Lucille Hammer, who has worked on behalf of The Salvation Army, Modesto Rotary, Chamber of Commerce and Girl Scouts Muir Trail Council, among others.
Modesto native Zenia Kim recently debuted her work in New York in the Academy of Art University's fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. She was part of a collaborative collection sponsored by the Italian Trade Commission. Born in Modesto, she graduated from Orestimba High School in Newman in 2001 and earned her bachelor's degree from California State University, Stanislaus, in 2007. She is pursuing her master's in fashion design at the Academy of Art University.
The Visiting Nurse Association of the Central Valley has been named to the 2011 HomeCare Elite, a compilation of the top performing home health agencies in the United States. The designation identifies the top 25 percent of agencies and highlights the top 100 and top 500 agencies. Winners are ranked by an analysis of performance measures in quality outcomes, process of care measures and financial performance. Nancy Sill of Modesto received an award for community awareness during a meeting of the California Society of Tax Consultants. She has taught accounting at Modesto Junior College since 2000 and has been an advocate for her students and the accounting industry.
Modesto Junior College nursing Professor Kelly Butler was honored by Alpha Phi chapter Chi Eta Phi Sorority with a Nurse of Distinction award. Alpha Phi is the Stockton chapter of Chi Eta Phi, an organization of more than 8,000 registered nurses and nursing students.
Butler became a registered nurse after graduating from Chabot Community College and earned her master's degree in nursing from California State University, Sacramento. She has worked primarily in cardiac care and staff development. She is a course coordinator at MJC for first semester students.
