PATTERSON -- Tom Hallinan likely will represent a sixth Stanislaus County community after the City Council selected him to serve as city attorney here.
Hallinan has been interim city attorney in Patterson since George Logan resigned in May 2010. He also represents the cities of Oakdale, Riverbank and Newman as well as the communities of Grayson and Denair.
"It's a lot of hats," said Hallinan, who also just got married in September. And he returned a call Thursday after completing work in another of his roles, as trustee on the Yosemite Community College District board.
He also has entered into a private business with Oakdale Police Chief Marty West, human resources analyst Michelle Vizina and former Oakdale City Manager Steve Hallam. They formed Turlock-based VHHW Investigations, which will conduct workplace investigations, background checks, legal services and human resources consulting.
"I'm one of those people who tends to work better when there's a lot of work."
The governing boards he works with all meet on different nights of the month; Hallinan has a deputy, Doug White, who works with him and can sit in if there's a special meeting or a conflict.
Patterson City Council members selected Hallinan through a secret ballot Monday night, City Manager Rod Butler said.
"Mr. Hallinan was the top choice of four out of the five members of the council," Butler said in an e-mail. "That process was followed by some discussion among the five members, and consensus was reached to direct me to begin the negotiations process with Mr. Hallinan."
The city will come up with a contract for Hallinan and then vote on it at a future meeting.
Hallinan said he's confident he and the city can come to terms.
"I'm gratified that they've made that selection to get to the next step," he said. "I look forward to serving them."
