MERCED -- Goalkeeper Garrett Porter record 15 saves, punching back two penalty shots along the way, to assist the Modesto Junior College men's water polo team to a 9-8 win over Merced on Saturday.
The Pirates (9-4) also were led by Cameron Domasky with three goals, followed by two goals apiece by Rodrigoo Padilla and Manny Bettencourt and one apiece by Aaron Ziebell and Brandon Ruggeberg. Moesto started fast with a 4-1 lead.
CSUS WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Cal State Stanislaus' Marina Ghabbour placed 15th, good for All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors, at the CCAA Championships in Santa Rosa. Ghabbour ran a personal best time of 21:58.7. Stanislaus' Courtney Anderson was 17th (22:07.7) The Warriors finished fifth as Chico State won its fourth straight title.
CSUS MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Kanwar Dhaliwal came in 17th at 26:39.3 over the 8-kilometer course to lead the Warriors at the CCAA Championships. Stanislaus finished sixth in team standings, far behind Chico State which claimed its 10th consecutive title.
Stanislaus competed without Dawson Vordebruegge, its top runner, due to a back injury. The Warriors' Anthony Fagundes was 38th at 27:40.4.
MJC WRESTLING Heavyweight Michael Robles picked up a fourth-place finish as the Pirates placed 12th among 16 teams at Cuesta College's Meathead Invitational. MJC's Erick Gomez (174) also medaled by placing fifth. Both Modesto wrestlers went 4-2 for the day.
CSUS VOLLEYBALL The Warriors led 2-1 but eventually dropped a five-set match for the first time this season, as host Cal Poly Pomona (10-11, 7-9) rallied for the 25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-10 CCAA win.
The Warriors (9-10, 5-10) again were led by senior Lianne Vicchio with 23 kills and 18 digs.
