Brad Williams has expanded his reper-toire, growing from a two-sport standout at Riverbank High to a world-class athlete in three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running.
On Saturday, Williams will put all three together at the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Williams has served in the Air Force since graduating from Riverbank in 2004, where he was "an ordinary athlete who played football and basketball," he wrote in an e-mail.
In 2008, Williams took up the sport of triathlon 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run and has quickly risen through its ranks.
He qualified for Kona at the Ironman Korea in July, posting a finishing time of 10 hours, 31 seconds.
Only 1,800 competitors are invited to Hawaii for the world championships.
Australians Chris McCormack (8:10:37) and Mirinda Carfrae (8:58:36) captured the event last year.
