Modesto police searching for shooting suspect

July 31, 2011

— Modesto police are looking for a man they suspect of wounding his estranged wife and killing one of her acquaintances Sunday night.

Modesto resident Conrado Lopez, 36, is suspected of driving up to two cars at Seventh and B streets about 8:43 p.m. and opening fire, said Lt. Rick Armendariz, a Police Department spokesman.

Lopez is 6 feet tall, weighs 160 pounds and was believed to be driving a white 2001 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab pickup with the California license plate 6N26553. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Armendariz said the women felt threatened after speaking with Lopez on Sunday afternoon. The shooting victim, an acquaintance, offered to follow the woman home for her protection.

Armendariz said investigators believe Lopez drove up and began firing, then fled. He is wanted on suspicion of homicide and attempted homicide. He said investigators have asked statewide law enforcement and border patrol agents for help.

The estranged wife, who suffered nonlife-threatening injuries, was found in one car, and her acquaintance in another. Police did not release the names of the estranged wife and the man who was killed.
