Granite Bay runner Greg Bomhoff finished the 135-mile Badwater Ultramarathon in 34 hours, 6 minutes, 3 seconds earlier this month.
It was Bomhoff's debut in one of the world's toughest races, which traverses Death Valley and ends with a steep climb up Mount Whitney.
The 43-year-old real-estate management executive had exceeded his own expectations through the first 122 miles, which he completed in 24 hours, 13 minutes.
But at Mile 128, in fifth place, he was forced to stop for more than seven hours.
"He just ran out of steam, but the medical check showed his vitals were fine," said Bomhoff's father, Ron. "He went back to the motel, had a warm bath and solid food. And he came back and finished strong."
Bomhoff was running to raise funds for his children's school, Franklin Elementary in Loomis.
The race was won by Oswaldo Lopez of Los Angeles with a time of 23:41:40.
