Los Banos trucker wins national honor

David Areias, who works out of Ruan Transportation Management Services' Turlock terminal, earned the Des Moines, Iowa-based company's 2010 Driver of the Year honor. He was chosen from a pool of more than 3,700 drivers nationwide.

Areias lives in Los Banos and has logged more than 2 million miles in his 40-year trucking career.

He was among the 106 finalists from the company's 233 terminals, and then from the 11 regional winners summoned to Des Moines for the awards ceremony earlier this month.

Areias, who does farm pickup in Ruan's dairy and bulk food division, also received a trophy and $5,000. The regional winners received trophies.

Family-owned Musco Family Olive Co., the nation's leading supplier of table olives, has been recognized as a California 2011 Leader in Innovation in Energy and Agriculture by Grow-California. Musco earned the honor for its cutting-edge approach to business, which has a positive impact on California's agricultural industry and economy. Musco received the Game Changer of the Year Award in the category of Innovation in Energy and Agriculture, earning the recognition specifically for its most recent initiative, the Renewable Energy and Wastewater System.

The company converts more than 15 tons of olive pits to carbon-neutral heat energy each day, using them to power the largest industrial steam engine in the United States. The system supplies more than half of the facility's electrical needs.

Two attorneys from the Modesto office of the McCormick, Barstow, Sheppard, Wayte and Carruth LLP firm have been named "super lawyers" for 2011. Family law attorney Kenneth C. Cochrane and civil litigation specialist Matthew K. Hawkins made the list, which evaluates candidates on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. The super lawyer designation applies to the top 5 percent of the state's active licensed attorneys.

Stanislaus County was among the Gold Award winners for its display at the California State Fair. Other area counties to receive the honor included Amador, Calaveras and San Joaquin. Silver Awards went to a group that included Mariposa and Tuolumne counties; Mariposa also earned a Superintendent's Award.
