Merced County DA elected to state board

Merced County District Attorney Larry D. Morse was elected to serve as a member of the board of directors of the California District Attorneys Association during their June conference. Morse, 54, has been district attorney since July 2006. He has worked in the DA's office since 1993. The California District Attorneys Association serves the needs and promotes the interests of California's prosecutors. It has more than 2,500 members.

The Stanislaus Wilderness Volunteers have received the 2011 National Wilderness Aldo Leopold Award for Overall Wilderness Stewardship from chief of the Forest Service Tom Tidwell. The award is the highest honor for volunteer efforts to assist the Forest Service in managing congressionally designated wilderness for the benefit of the American people. Awards are given in six categories including wilderness education (which the Stanislaus volunteers won in 2004), traditional skills-minimum tool use, wilderness research, individual and group stewardship, and line officer leadership.

The Modesto 500 Lions Club installed its officers during a recent dinner. Claudia Miller is the new president, with Dennis Miner first vice president and Carol Shipley second vice president. Pat Casey-Gillum is secretary and Pat Dimond is treasurer. Lion tamers are Karen Forakis and Sue Carner. Tail twisters are Bill Ames and Jessenya Hernandez; and directors are Craig Kellogh, John DeLaMora, Diane Ringer and Brower Dimond. Casey-Gillum, Jeanine Tucker and Domarina Awdow will head the club's membership committee.

Wayne Hill, who stepped down as president, presented several awards for service during his tenure. Diamond received the Hearing Foundation's Tosch Fellowship. Lori Begen received life membership by Canine Companions. Jerry Cooper was honored for sight conservation excellence. Tucker received the scrapbook award. Forakis earned the Leo Advisor Service Award, and Tom Hogan was Rookie of the Year. Awdow received the Jim Brazelton Spirit Award, and Shipley got the Helen Keller Award. Paul Forakis and DeLaMora shared the Melvin Jones Award. Michelle Zaldua earned Lion of the Year and Claudia Miller, Brian Bergstrom and Kelli Bergstrom shared the Presidential Achievement Award. Hill received the Bull Thrower's Award.

Modesto Junior College has been awarded a Talent Search Grant from the federal Department of Education. The school will get $313,850 a year for five years.

The grant funds a long-running, successful TRIO-Talent Search program that helps students succeed in high school and transition to college. The program will work with two Modesto middle schools, two high schools and a continuation center with high percentages of low-income, first-generation students.
