NEW YORK The New York Rangers are handing out two annual camp scholarships to military children in memory of forward Derek Boogaard, who died earlier this year.
Two 8-year old boys from New York, who have family members in the military, will attend the weeklong Rangers Summer Youth Hockey Camp this month at the Madison Square Garden Training Center.
They were chosen from the Defending the Blue Line program, created by soldiers to make hockey accessible to military children. Boogaard, found dead on May 13, donated four tickets to every Rangers home game last season to military families. He dubbed the group "Boogaard's Boogaardians." ...
The Blues have signed forward Jonathan Cheechoo, a former Shark, to a one-year contract. Cheechoo has been in the American Hockey League the last two seasons. He had 18 goals and 29 assists in 55 games last season with the Worcester Sharks.

The U.S. Tennis Association says the singles champions at this year's U.S. Open will each receive a record $1.8 million. Total prize money is rising by more than $1 million to $23.7 million, the most ever for the Grand Slam tournament. ... Victor Hanescu of Romania saved two match points before beating top-seeded Gael Monfils 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 in the first round of the Mercedes Cup. ... Russia's Ksenia Pervak saved six match points to advance to the quarterfinals of the Gastein Ladies, beating 16-year-old Nastja Kolar of Slovenia 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2.

The Canadian predicts that the long straightaway into the 90-degree Turn 1 at Edmonton's new airport track will guarantee more crashes unless IndyCar modifies the controversial double-file restarts.

Joe Montana's son has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless driving stemming from a traffic stop in which he declined a breathalyzer test. University of Montana quarterback Nate Montana was pulled over for going 39 mph in a 25 mph zone in Missoula early June 3, smelled alcohol and fumbled with his driver's license, said a sheriff's deputy.
