The Ceres City Council voted unanimously Monday night to postpone a public hearing and vote on a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter at Mitchell and Service roads.
The City Council continued the matter to its Aug. 11 meeting.
Wal-Mart representatives requested the continuance to allow more time to complete a sales strategy for its store at Mitchell and Hatch roads.
Wal-Mart would be the anchor store for the proposed Mitchell Ranch Center; a 300,000-square-foot shopping complex that would serve as the southern gateway to the city.
Opponents of the Mitchell Ranch Center are concerned that when Wal-Mart opens its supercenter, its existing store will remain vacant.
In the most recent version of its sales strategy, Wal-Mart is required to have a marketing strategy for its existing building approved by the City Council before a building permit is issued for the new location.
It also precludes competitors from purchasing the store.
