Former Cal State Stanislaus coach dies

May 30, 2011

— Cal State Stanislaus athletic director Milt Richards confirmed that former track and field assistant coach Mark Erickson died on Sunday.

Erickson, who coached several national champions and All-Americans for nearly 30 years as the program's throws coach, battled heart problems in the last few years, said Richards, unsure of the cause of death.

"We're all saddened by the loss of Dr. Mark Erickson, who was one of the finest coaches and people I've known," Richards added.

Erickson is a member of the school's Hall of Fame and was recently honored for his service with a plaque at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.

A native of Hughson, Erickson is survived by his wife Jenny.
