-- A 12-year-old girl who was struck by a car while riding her bicycle remains in critical condition at a Bay Area hospital, Modesto police said Friday.

The girl was struck by a pickup Thursday evening as she rode her bike north on Carver Road across Briggsmore Avenue.

The girl was thrown from her bike and landed in the street, unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse, according to Sgt. Brian Findlen. Two nurses who were passing by stopped to administer first aid and CPR, he said.

The girl was revived, taken to a local hospital and eventually transferred to a hospital in the Bay Area.

Findlen said the girls injuries were life threatening and described her condition as "grave."

Contacted Friday, the driver, 25-year-old Daniel Covarrubias of Turlock, said only that it was an accident and he did not want to discuss the details.

"Me and my family, we are all praying for her fast recovery," Covarrubias said of the 12-year-old girl.

Findlen said a preliminary investigation revealed the girl ran the red light, but officers are still working to determine who is at fault.
