Chemicals reported leaking at UC Merced; two custodians taken to hospital for evaluation

April 25, 2011

A chemical spill at UC Merced prompted a closure of the Science and Engineering Building around 9:15 p.m. Monday. No injuries were reported, but two custodians who discovered the spill were taken to Mercy Medical Center for evaluation.

The spill was found just after 9 p.m. on the third floor of the science and engineering building. Campus officials said the spill involved a small amount of water treatment chemicals used in industrial and large buildings to prevent mineral build-up in pipes. The chemicals are not flammable and are similar to strong bleach, said Kevin Creed, environmental health and safety director, in an emergency bulletin issued around 11 p.m.

The building was closed as emergency crews responded.

The spill appeared to be limited to one room of the building and has been contained.

UC Merced officials said they don't anticipate further health risks or damage.
