Stanislaus Deputy: Suspected prostitute badly beaten by customer

January 11, 2011

A suspected prostitute was severely beaten early this morning, authorities said.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a woman in the roadway in the 1000 block of River Road near Herndon Road.

When deputies arrived, they discovered a 55-year-old woman with both eyes swollen shut, missing teeth and swelling so bad it was hard to see where her mouth and nose were, Sgt. Frank Fenn said.

The suspect, who apparently met the woman at the Arrow Inn on 515 S. Ninth Street, had a disagreement with the woman, according to deputy Luke Schwartz, a department spokesman.

The woman is listed in serious condition at a Modesto hospital with lacerations, abrasions and significant swelling to her face, Schwartz said.

No weapons were involved in the attack, he said.

The suspect, described as a black male adult, left the area in a dark-colored minivan after dumping the woman on the side of the road. The woman's description of the suspect was limited given her condition, Schwartz said.

Schwartz said assaults to prostitutes happen frequently, and most go unreported.

"It's one of those unfortunate, unintended consequences with that lifestyle as that person is exposed to a very dangerous, violent element," Schwartz said.
