The Oakdale Fire Department is investigating a suspicious fire today that destroyed a vacant home early this morning.

Fire personnel responded to the blaze at a single-family residence on the 200 block of California Avenue shortly after midnight, according to Oakdale Division Chief Rick Fields.

No one was injured.

Harvey Duncan, who said he lives near the home, went outside after hearing sirens and a crackling noise. He estimated the flames to be 30 to 40 feet in the air.

Investigators are treating the fire as suspicious, Fields said.

Damage estimates are not available, but Fields called the home “a total loss.”

Oakdale’s seven engines responded to the two-alarm fire, along with Modesto and Escalon fire departments and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire.
