A goal just moments before the end of the first half energized the Modesto Junior College men's soccer team Tuesday.

The first of Francisco Chavez's two goals, assisted by Bruce Ocana, broke a scoreless tie and sent the Pirates on their way to a 4-0 win over Skyline in the Pirates' home opener.

MJC (2-0) rode the momentum into a dominant second half, featuring goals by Chavez, Fernando Madrigal and Andres Mendoza. Ariel Martinez picked up two assists and Ivan Perez added another. Modesto goalkeepers accounted for five saves, four by Guillermo Mejia.

• MJC WOMEN'S SOCCER — An early 1-0 lead gradually vanished as the Pirates (1-2) dropped their home opener to Skyline 6-3.

Cozette Heinze netted a cross from Julie Lennert to give MJC its fast start, but that lead turned into a 4-1 deficit. Modesto rallied to within 4-3 on a pair of goals by Sara Latham.

• STANISLAUS MEN RANKED — In its first regional poll, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America put the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team in a three-way tie for No. 8 in the West Region ranking.

The Warriors are tied with Humboldt State and Seattle Pacific, all with 0-0-1 records through Sunday's matches. Stanislaus spent six weeks in the regional poll last season and peaked at No. 6 at the end of the regular season.
