Downey High got on the winning track Thursday night with a 14-7 victory over Central Valley.

It evened the Knights’ record at 1-1, following last week’s 33-20 loss to Turlock. It was CV’s opener.

SIERRA 38, DAVIS 28, at Modesto — A week after losing a halftime lead, as well as its season-opener, the Timberwolves jumped to a 24-point halftime lead over the Spartans. This time, though, the ’Wolves maintained the lead.

Sierra broke open a tight game with three TDs in 4 minutes in the second quarter, including a 60-yard punt return from Harold Wright. Quarterback Adrian Valencia tossed a 13-yard score to Ruben Lopez and then ran one in from the 4 for a 24-0 halftime lead.

Davis (0-2), shut out 35-0 a week ago, didn’t score its first points of the season until there was just 3:54 left in the third quarter: Ray Vega’s 76-yard TD run. Before Davis could threaten, Anthony Cota scored on a 74-yard run to clinch Sierra’s (1-1) win.

SUMMERVILLE 32, MARIPOSA 12, at Mariposa — Zach Roberson (14 of 25, 231 yards, 2 TDs) and Tyler Gold (19 carries, 180 yards, 3 TDs) crashed the celebration, combining to lead their Bears to victory over the Grizzlies in the debut of Pioneer Market Grizzly Stadium — Mariposa’s on-campus facility.

It was the opener for both.

The 6-foot-3 Roberson led the Bears to TDs on their first three possessions, including a 20-yard score to Tige Wingo (5 catches, 90 yards) just before halftime. Gold had two 1-yard scoring runs in the half, then Roberson found his brother Zeb (4 catches, 63 yards) for a 27-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to make it 26-0.

Mariposa's offense got on track after coach Bob Kelly went to a spread.

That helped Mariposa’s brother duo of Justin (136 yards rushing, TD) and Brandon (17 carries, 80 yards, TD) Kinalele gain their yardage. Brandon was the first Mariposa player to score in the new stadium, a 5-yard sweep with 4:32 to play.
