WINTON -- Two brothers are recovering after being stabbed in Winton Park early Thursday morning, the Merced County Sheriff's Department reported.

The victims, who are 27 and 39, told deputies they are gang dropouts and were attacked by at least 12 gang members shortly after midnight, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman. The men said they were in the park, located at Olive Avenue and Winton Way, when they were beaten and stabbed in the back and upper torso.

Investigators said the victims suffered from several bruises and swelling, in addition to puncture wounds. They couldn't provide a description of their attackers, saying it was too dark. MacKenzie said the victims were uncooperative with deputies when they were trying to provide medical treatment and get information.

The victims were flown to a Modesto hospital.
