Humane Society chicken ad misleads

On Page A-9 of the Aug. 27 Bee was a full-page ad from The Humane Society of the United States. This ad claimed that "most eggs provided in the U.S. come from hens confined in cages so small they can't even spread their wings. Every scientific study in the last five years on this issue found that operations forcing hens to endure such extreme confinement had higher rates of salmonella contamination than cage-free farms."

On Page B-4 of the same issue, a news item reported: "Salmonella found in chicken feed." It follows with, "The recent salmonella issue that led to the recall of more than 550 million eggs from two Iowa farms was determined to be caused by salmonella in the chicken feed."

This being the case, why was the Humane Society's full-page ad allowed to run? It seems to me to be the Humane Society's blatant attempt to inflame the public and promote their agenda to take laying hens out of non-harmful cages! This is simply another false attack by the U.S. Humane Society on those involved with raising livestock.
