A two- week countywide effort to curb drunken driving wraps up this Labor Day weekend with saturation patrols tonight in Modesto, Ceres, Turlock, Oakdale and Riverbank and a sobriety checkpoint Saturday night in Oakdale.

The effort is part of the "Avoid the 12" campaign, which includes all 12 law enforcement agencies in Stanislaus County.

The roving saturation patrols consist of law enforcement officials assigned to look for people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The campaign's Labor Day effort is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by alcohol-related crashes.

The campaign is funded by a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety.

The California Highway Patrol also will have additional officers on the road looking for drunken drivers.
