One of the tasks for Enochs High coach James Stacy this fall was to find a replacement for last year's do-everything tailback, Donnavan Johnson.

One game into the season, it appears Stacy is on his way to accomplishing that chore.

Senior Herbert Whitehurst had a school-record 28 carries a week ago as Enochs rallied past Sierra in the second half.

"We were able to run inside and outside with Whitehurst, as well as putting in Justice Chambers for a change-up," Stacy said.

The Eagles averaged 5.5 yards on 44 carries. They hope to display similar ball control tonight when they face Buhach Colony in a battle of ranked teams at Johansen. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

There are three additional games tonight: Sierra vs. Davis at Downey, Summerville at Mariposa and Downey at Central Valley.

Whitehurst opened his season with a 165-yard effort, averaging 5.9 yards a carry, but will be just one of three talented backs on the field tonight.

Buhach's inside-outside tandem of Dallon Muse and Jarrell Davis combined for 2,129 yards and 24 TDs as juniors. The absence of top rusher Corey Chapman (1,546, 19 TDs) shifts more attention to those two.

Enochs' defense got off to a slow start against Sierra, giving up 25 points in the second quarter. They shut out Sierra in the second half, however.

"Kurtis Sewell was able to make calls on the field to adjust to Sierra's changes on offense," said Lacey, who relies on his linebacker to lead the defense. "We came away with everyone healthy and charged up for Buhach."
