Richard Jones has been named interim president of Columbia College, effective Aug. 23.
The move was announced Wednesday night by the Yosemite Community College District trustees.
Jones has experience in interim roles running the Barstow, Palomar, Victor Valley and South Orange County community college districts.
These interim duties follow a long career as chancellor of San Bernardino Community College District, president of Clarke College in Vancouver, Wash., and founding president of Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest.
Jones steps into the seat held by Joan Smith, who took over as interim chancellor of the Yosemite district Aug. 1.
"We were lucky to find Dr. Jones. I am sure the students and the Columbia College community will welcome his vast years of experience and expertise in community colleges," Smith said.
Added Pat Dean, chairwoman of the board of trustees: "He has a long history in community college leadership roles throughout the state and should be a good addition to our wonderful college."
Jones received his education doctorate degree from UCLA, and master and bachelor of arts degrees from San Jose State University.
"I am impressed with how well-run Columbia College is, and I consider it a significant honor to have the opportunity of working with the college and the Yosemite CCD," Jones said following his appointment.
"These are difficult financial times for California's community colleges and the state," he said.
"If we keep our focus on meeting student needs, then any budget issues that might occur this coming year should be limited to conflicts between the short-term and long-term best interests of students."
