AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY — 11th annual Sundown Celebration Gala, "An Evening Under the Sea," is scheduled for Aug. 7 between 7 p.m. and midnight at the home of Jim and Anita Duarte of Duarte Nursery in Hughson. The extravaganza features gourmet dining, live music and dancing, entertainment, live and silent auctions, midway games, pig races and other special attractions while raising funds for cancer-related programs and services. Tickets are available at $125 through July 30, $150 after that date. Volunteers 18 and older are needed to assist with setup, decorations, registration, auctions and games during the event, and cleanup the following day. A volunteer orientation will be provided prior to the event.

CERES PARTNERSHIP FOR HEALTHY CHILDREN — The 15th annual Family Resource Fun Fest will be celebrated Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Whitmore Park in Ceres. This free event for all ages is packed with games, activities, prizes, food, family resources and community information. Volunteers 14 and older are needed to assist with setup and cleanup, decorations, balloons, refreshment stands, games, bounce house and face painting, as well as to manage raffles, greet and place vendors as they arrive, and more. Flexible shifts are available between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods of time.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, STANISLAUS — HabitatNOW invites youth ages 10 to 18 to join special construction opportunities for youth volunteers. (Adults are also welcome to participate.) Volunteers will build homes alongside low-income families while they build their dream of homeownership and assist in all areas of house construction and cleanup under trained supervision. These special builds will be held July 31 and Aug. 18 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Lunch is provided. Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes and old, comfortable clothing. Additional build opportunities for volunteers 16 and older are available Wednesdays from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Modesto and on select Saturdays with dates and times to be announced in Turlock. Orientations are held at 12:30 p.m. every Thursday or the second Saturday of each month for interested volunteers.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT 2010 — The Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department's Marshall Youth Center will host this year's event Aug. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. The free event provides a safe and fun block-party environment for families. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug awareness, generate support for and participation in anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood partnerships and let criminals know neighborhoods are fighting back. Volunteers 14 and older can participate between 4 and 8:30 p.m. with setup, cleanup, face painting, a chalk art contest and assisting the emcee with the evening's entertainment coordination.

HAVEN WOMEN'S CENTER OF STANISLAUS — Haven provides shelter and support services for women and their children affected by domestic violence, assists victims with temporary restraining orders and provides support and advocacy to survivors of sexual assault. Volunteer opportunities include trauma response (hospital response to domestic violence and sexual assault victims), shelter and crisis line, support group facilitation, peer counseling, shelter child care, youth groups, legal program and staffing information tables. Haven will be conducting a 72-hour training series for all volunteers from Aug. 2 through Sept. 14. Classes are held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Interested volunteers must register before July 30 to take part in this informative and beneficial training. Registration will be closed after first 20 confirmed applicants. All volunteers must be at least 17 and pass a background check.

VOLUNTEER CENTER OF UNITED WAY — Volunteers 16 and older are needed to answer phones, assist with computer input, filing, contact nonprofits to update service opportunities and develop volunteer placements, and update an online searchable database. Flexible scheduling is available weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
