While baseball is the marquee sport in Billy Flamion's future, the Central Catholic High senior says he still has another year of football left in him.
"I'm excited about football season," said Flamion, a safety on defense and a jack-of-all-trades on offense. "We're putting in part of Modesto Christian's offense and I'm excited about playing quarterback when we go to the Wildcat."
Flamion had 19 carries and 34 catches for 751 yards and eight TDs last year, as well as four interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 81 tackles.
One of the nation's top baseball recruits, Flamion has the option of skipping football to focus on his best bet for a college scholarship. There's also the fear of a potential injury.
"There's always apprehension because of the injury factor, but it's his senior year and you can't take this opportunity away from him," said Bridget Flamion, Billy's mom. "His dad wants him to focus on baseball, in part because of the injury concern."
Having Flamion in pads is a godsend for the Raiders. He is their most versatile athlete, capable of fulfilling any role.
He typically lined up in the slot last year, and was the last line of defense as the safety.
With Central looking to upgrade its offense it will use elements of the fly offense, a deceptive scheme with players in motion on every play Flamion is expected to appear at a variety of positions.
Central has a Sac-Joaquin Section record 15 titles, but lost the final in 2008 and fell in the quarterfinals in 2009. It had won 10 of the last 11 small-school crowns prior to 2008.
"We look good running the offense, and I'm getting snaps at quarterback," he said. "I'm there once we start school."
