Thousands of people lined the streets of Modesto on Sunday for the city's annual Fourth of July parade, celebrated to the theme of "Lincoln ... A Legacy."
Several men dressed as Honest Abe sat atop floats and waved from vehicles as the parade wound its way through downtown for about two hours. Families and groups of friends cheered and applauded from the curbs and sidewalks.
At the Damrell building at 16th and I streets, a huge American flag was unfurled from the balcony of the building's top floor just before the parade started.
After a squadron of Modesto police motorcycles raced up and down the streets, the parade began with a contingent of veterans who marched the route through the heart of the city.
Politicians were plentiful, including U.S. Rep. Dennis Cardoza. Stanislaus County supervisors Jim DiMartini and Dick Monteith waved to onlookers from the bed of an antique truck while Modesto city council members shouted "happy Fourth" from cars and trucks.
Other entries ranged from church groups to roller derby girls, Mexican folk dancers to child beauty queens, the military, law enforcement, businesses and Shriners.
