Shooting reported near BMW dealership on McHenry Avenue

Shooter was on motorcycle; Victim in critical condition

June 16, 2010

A man was shot this afternoon near the Valley BMW car dealership on McHenry Avenue in Modesto, authorities said.

The victim was shot at least twice, once in the torso and once in the shoulder. He was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. He went into surgery in the afternoon, said Lt. Charles Grom of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. He was still in surgery as of 5:15 p.m.

Authorities do not believe his wounds are life-threatening, Grom said. The man's name, age and hometown were not released.

The suspect fled on a high-performance street racing motorcycle and was last seen driving southbound on McHenry Avenue, Grom said. Investigators believe the suspect is from the San Francisco Bay Area and that the shooter and victim know each other.

Grom said the victim, who was driving a black BMW, was able to give deputies what they believe is the first name of the suspect.

The shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m.

Investigators believe the victim was shot on Bangs Avenue, close to the Valley BMW dealership at the corner of McHenry Avenue and Bangs. They believe the victim then backed up into a driveway leading into the dealership from Bangs.

The car was stopped in the middle of the driveway with its doors open.

Valley BMW is at 4369 McHenry Ave., on the west side of the street. Bangs was closed to traffic near the crime scene as detectives investigated.

The shooting took place along Modesto's auto row on north McHenry, where many dealerships are clustered.

Authorities were pulling surveillance videos from dealerships to try to determine what happened.
