Sometimes being slightly off-beat will help you land not just an interview, but a job.

Scott Rossell, author of the e-book “Get Ready To Live!” (Scott A. Rossell, $9.95), relaxed a little when he approached one employer. He thought he’d be good for vp of IT, but he’d never been a vp of any kind. His sense of humor landed an interview with HR.

“I don’t have any experience as a vp,” he wrote, “but I also don’t play golf, so I’ll like … show up and stuff.” HR found him to be a lively interview and scheduled a follow-up with the IT manager.

The big day came, but she was too sick to get to the office. The vp of IT took over.

“He seemed quite happy with me and quickly offered me a position in the department,” Rossell says. “As he shook my hand, welcoming me to the department, he turned and grabbed something from behind his office door on his way out -- his golf clubs.”

The golfer must have made a quick decision about a guy who didn’t play golf. He might be just the person for the job the golfer was quitting.

Ease up a bit and you might get what you want.
