You might think that going to a recruiter, job search consultant or even an employer doesn’t require you to be as sharp as you can be.
What are you thinking?
Donna Shannon, author of the self-published “Get a Job Without Going Crazy” ($16.99), recruited in a variety of contexts before she became a job search consultant.
Sales candidates often arrived after leaving their wits at home.
“They constantly walked into the large glass wall leading into the suite,” she reports. “The shock sent resume copies flying every time,” along with the person’s composure.
Ten minutes into an interview, one candidate worried about there not being parking vouchers and “asked if we could ‘hurry things up’ since his wife was circling the block,” she says.
Shannon also screened hiring managers as part of her job assisting the controller of a broadcast industry leader.
“One candidate showed up in a super-sexy, low-cut white dress and ultra-high heels,” she explains. “She pointed out that her pierced you-know-what’s ‘really gave her an edge’ for the job.”
As a consultant at Coyote Visions, Shannon received a call from one client wondering if she could sue for discrimination. A company had rejected her because of piercings and tattoos.
