Get ready for the busiest six days of the high school sports year: By the time the sun sets on Saturday, dozens of teams will have had their hearts broken and a select group will be celebrating championships.
The best bets for Stanislaus District champions include:
• Central Catholic baseball has won 10 straight titles, but will have to contend with Escalon and Linden among others to win the Division 5 title and stretch its streak to 11.
• Ripon's girls soccer team is out to defend its D-5 title. If that's going to happen, Ripon will likely need to beat Linden or Patterson in the final.
• Escalon is favored to win its second straight D-5 softball title. It faced challenges during league, so Patterson, Hughson and Calaveras all believe Escalon is vulnerable.
• Waterford and hurler Jessica George fell in the D-6 title game a year ago, but the 'Cats are the top seed this spring.
The district usually enjoys more success in small-school divisions, though there are a few large-school teams expected to challenge for crowns.
Beyer and Turlock are part of what should be a competitive D-1 baseball tourney, and Oakdale is sending its league championship baseball and softball teams to play in D-4.
D-1 soccer opened its playoffs Friday and today's featured quarterfinal has Turlock hosting Enochs, with the winner likely to see mighty St. Mary's in the semifinals.
