On the eve of the Academy Awards, best actor nominee Jeremy Renner recorded a short video thanking the people of Modesto -- his hometown -- for supporting him.

"Hey, hey, Modesto, what's happen'?" begins the video, in which Renner has his arm draped over the shoulders of his mother, Valerie Cearley.

"Just want to say thanks for all your support, couldn't be happier to be here and have my mom as my date and to be sharing this experience with you."

In the middle of the recording in Los Angeles, Renner's phone rings and he jokes that his phone has "been going bananas lately."

"Thank you, thank you, thank you, and we'll see you tomorrow on the carpet," he says. "Man, this is going to be really exciting. We hope we don't disappoint you guys. Thank you."

Renner grew up in Modesto and graduated from Beyer High School. He took his first acting lessons at Modesto Junior College and eventually moved to LA to pursue a career in the movies. His Academy Award nomination is for his intense portrayal of a soldier in the Iraqi war drama "The Hurt Locker," which is up for best picture.

Renner's family passed along the video to The Modesto Bee.
