BASEBALL

MODESTO EMPIRE -- Baseball/softball: Cal Ripken registration for ages 4 to 12 on March 6 at the Empire clubhouse behind Teel Middle, time is 9 a.m. to noon. Copy of birth certificate required. Cost is $75 for t-ball and $125 for ages 7-12. Babe Ruth registration for ages 13-15 is on Saturdays, March 6, 13, 20, and 27 at Davis Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please bring copy of birth certificate. Season for 13-14s is April 5-May 10; 16-game schedules plus potential all-star team. Season 14-15s is May 10-July 3; 18-game schedule and potential all-star team. RED SHIELD -- The Salvation Army Red Shield 2010 baseball signups are underway. Bring a birth certiciate to the offices at 1649 Las Vegas St. in Modesto, Monday through Friday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per player, for ages 5-13. Umpires and coaches needed.

BASKETBALL

BACKYARD CLINIC -- Backyard Sports Academy (formerly Backyard Baseball, still at 6212 West Main St., Turlock) holds coed clinics on Saturdays from 9-11 a.m. including drills and game instruction for $10. Co ed Clinic Sat. Backyard Boyz League starts Feb. 4, 5:30-7 p.m. for 12-unders. Instruction, games and lots of fun. All instruction by coach Keith Larsen. AAU TRAVEL -- Team tryouts for grades 5-6 are March 6 from 5-6:30 p.m. at Ustach Middle School; time is 6:30-8 p.m. for grades 7-8; grades 9-10 tryouts are March 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. and March 28 from 2-3:30 p.m. at Modesto Christian High; grades 11-12 Marck 27 from 7:30-9 p.m., March 28 from 4-5:30 p.m. at MC. CYBA SIGN-UPS -- California Youth Basketball League is currently registering boys and girls, ages 4-18 for their winter 2010 season. Individual and team registrations accepted. TURLOCK HOUSE OF HOOPS -- Nonprofit youth organization that facilitates athletic, academic, and social development of youth in the Central Valley. Our organization will attempt to bring a year-round AAU boys & girls basketball program to local youth. Players will be in competitive games and tournaments and improve their skill level by being coached by experienced coaches.
