TURLOCK -- Emanuel Medical Center welcomed a new board member and celebrated a volunteer last week.
Arlon Waterson, who has enjoyed a long association with the hospital, joined the 12-member board that sets policy and direction for the medical center.
Waterson, 57, is co-owner of Hilmar Lumber and began volunteering at Emanuel when he attended Hilmar High School in the 1960s.
Later, wife Susan worked as a nurse at Emanuel and he started volunteering again. First, he served on the Festival of Trees committee, which raises money for Hospice of Emanuel, then on the Hospice of Emanuel Advisory Board.
Another board member, Dr. Paul Carmichael, will serve as Emanuel's chief of medical staff for 2010. Carmichael is a board-certified general surgeon practicing at Oasis Surgical, inside Emanuel Medical Plaza.
Other Emanuel board members include Jennifer Larson, chairwoman; Walter C. de Bruyn, vice chairman; Arthur De Rooy, treasurer; Marlene Stante, secretary; Jim Ahlem; Jim Pallios; Wade Fullmer; Bob Field;
Dr. Isaac E. Faraji, vice chief of medical staff; Dr. Kathleen Kearns, secretary of medical staff; and John R. Sigsbury, Emanuel president and chief executive officer.
Retired educator Jim Norby of Turlock was named Hospice of Emanuel's 2010 volunteer of the year. Norby began volunteering with the hospice in January 2007, donating more than 250 hours as a family visitor. Norby, a Turlock resident, was a special education administrator with the Stanislaus County Office of Education before his retirement.
Longtime Foster Farms executive Yubert Envia has been named chairman of the National Turkey Federation and will have the honor of presenting President Barack Obama with the National Thanksgiving Turkey in November.
Envia, a Turlock native, has worked at Foster Farms since graduating from California State University, Stanislaus, 21 years ago. He oversees Foster Farms' two turkey processing facilities, a feed mill, turkey grow-out ranches and the live-haul operation in Turlock, as well as its three breeder facilities and two hatcheries in Northern and Southern California. He directs all prepared food production and operations.
The Stanislaus County board of supervisors appointed Elisa Duke to the county's mental health board.
