A man was shot and wounded Monday night in a northeast Modesto convenience store parking lot, Modesto police reported.

Officers responded to an emergency call about 7:45 p.m. near the Quik Stop Market at 1532 Lakewood Ave., at the intersection with Briggsmore Avenue. Police said they found one gunshot victim near the store.

The unidentified victim was taken to a Modesto hospital, where he was being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Police dispatched additional units to the area upon learning the gunman had fled toward an apartment complex at 1401 Lakewood, near Orangeburg Avenue.

Officers hadn’t taken any suspects into custody late Monday but remained in the area. They were searching for a African-American male, 17 to 18 years old, wearing a white knit cap, blue pants and brown hoodie lined with fur.

Police hadn’t determined the motive for the shooting but believe it occurred during a dispute between the victim and gunman in the parking lot.
