Riverbank High appeared on the way to an pull-away victory, leading by seven points with 1:47 to play, before Ripon Christian made the Bruins sweat it out by scoring six straight points.
That was a close as it got, though, as the Bruins hung on for a 52-51 Trans-Valley League stunner at RC on Friday night. Six-foot-8 Tyler Goslinga scored 22 for RC, but Riverbank didn’t allow any other Knight to score more than 10.
Riverbank led 52-45 when Logan Vos (10 points) hit a trey to make it 52-48, then Goslinga scored to make it 52-50 with 1 minute remaining. RC (16-5, 3-3) fouled on the next two Riverbank possessions, but Riverbank missed the front end of both one-and-ones. Goslinga was fouled on a rebound put-back with 1.6 seconds, but after making the first, he missed and the Bruins rebounded the ball for the win.
Alex Reynaga (16 points), Manuel Jimenez (13) and Zach Gonzales (10) led the way for Riverbank (11-11, 2-4).
Ripon (12-11, 4-2 TVL) moved into sole possession of second place behind Modesto Christian (6-0 in TVL) by jumping to a 30-16 halftime lead on its way to a 51-38 win over Hughson (2-15, 0-6). Ripon hit nine 3-pointers. Matt Ratto scored 18 for the Indians, who upset Escalon earlier in the week, while Kody Wengel added 14. Hughson’s Chris Pimentel, one of the section’s top 3-point shooters, had 16 points four more treys.
WILDCATS WIN — Sonora (15-9, 9-4) improved its playoff hopes, as junior Alex Kiriluk scored 24 points and the Wildcats used a 14-2 game-ending for a 57-45 VOL win over Lathrop (0-24, 0-13). Zach Gorgas added 10 points for the Wildcats, while Eric Sutton had seven rebounds.
Jake Martinez (14 points) and Vince Thompson (10) tried, but they couldn’t generate enough offense to keep Oakdale from dropping a 46-40 VOL decision to East Union. EU’s Tyler Bylow had 15 points, all of them on treys, while Ricky Inderbitzin and Teejay Gordon added three treys apiece. EU to score 33 of its 46 points on 3-pointers.
STILL ON TOP — Central Catholic (18-4, 10-1) secured its grip on first place in the Western Athletic Conference, as guards Ky Wilson (13 points) and Anthony Alamo (10) combined for 23 points in a 61-33 win over Gustine 93-18, 1-10). It was 35-14 by halftime.
LIONS ROARING — When Big Valley’s Taylor Aderholt hit two free throws with 9.3 seconds remaining in regulation, it looked as if the Lions were on their way to victory. That changed when Bubba Wall hit 3-pointer from the corner with 3.5 seconds to tie it. The Lions rebounded in overtime, though, and pulled away for a 76-63 Harvest Christian League win over Stockton Christian.
Big Valley (10-10, 7-3) overcame a poor night at the free-throw line (16 of 39), as Aderholt and Caleb Theodore made key free throws in OT for the homecoming win in front of a capacity crowd. Senior guards Corey Wells, Aderholt and Caleb Theodore combined for 43 points, while Wells added seven rebounds, six assists, five steals and a blocked shot. Sophomore Center Jonathon McCall added nine 9 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, five steals, and four blocks.
Zach Roberson scored 16 points and Summerville (7-10, 2-3 Mother Lode League) escaped from Angels Camp with a 47-46 win over Bret Harte (8-13, 1-4). Roberson and Taylor Gold hit two treys apiece for the Bears, who carried a 36-34 lead into the fourth quarter. Martin De Anda (14 points) and Matt Brechtel (12) led the Bullfogs’ comeback bid.
Denair (12-10, 6-5) used a balanced attack, with Clayton McDonald, Colby Wooten and Colin Sosa scoring 13 points apiece, to upset Le Grand (10-8, 7-4) 55-47 on the road in the Southern League. Denair led 28-13 at halftime and helped itself with five 3-pointers, while Le Grand managed just one and lost despite a 16-point effort from Dannon Graham.
It’s been a season of struggles for Enochs (13-11, 2-5), but the Eagles got some relief as Scott Robertson scored 14 points in a 47-37 Modesto Metro Conference win over Downey.
