TURLOCK — There’s playing good defense, and then there’s playing the sort of defense that top-ranked large school Turlock High played Thursday night.
The Bulldogs (20-4, 9-0) turned up the pressure, attacking all over the court, allowing just eight field goals on their way to a 65-22 Central California Conference rout of Golden Valley. The Cougars (5-18, 1-7) didn’t score more than seven points in any quarter.
Turlock jumped to a lead 15-0 in the first five minutes and never let up. Turlock was led by guards Camille Roberts and Kayla Schumann with 18 points apiece, with Schumann hitting three 3-pointers and Roberts hitting two treys.
Candace Sakuda took care of the inside, scoring 11 points and helping Turlock outrebound the Cougars 45-22.
STATUS QUO — It took a half for East Union to gets its offense going, but there was no stopping the No. 2-ranked large-school Lancers once they found their stroke.
The Lancers scored 42 points in the second half, rallying from a four-point halftime deficit for a 63-54 win over Oakdale. It kept EU (19-4, 11-1) comfortably in first place with a 2½-game lead over second-place Sonora.
Krystal Young (21 points) and Shalane Jackson (12) led the Lancers’ resurgence, with Young scoring 14 in the second half and EU shooting 68 percent from the free-throw line. Oakdale’s Cassandra Clark scored 20.
With Brittany Malone (13 points) inside and Kelli Keefe (11) outside, No. 4 large-school Sonora (14-10, 9-4) maintained its hot streak with a 59-29 VOL win over Lathrop (2-21, 0-13). It was Sonora’s fifth win in the last six games — the lone loss was to East Union — and Tori Selesia chipped in six points, five steals and three assists.
EAGLES RISING — Brya Sablan did a little bit of everything for Enochs, with five points, six rebounds and four assists, while the No. large-school Eagles (16-7, 6-1) parlayed their 46-24 win over Downey (1-17, 0-7) and an upset loss by Modesto (13-9, 6-1) to move into a share of first place in the Modesto Metro Conference.
Enochs didn’t waste any time disposing of the Knights, jumping to a 26-10 halftime lead, and sophomore guard Jenna Garrett scored 11 for the Eagles.
COBLE ON TARGET — Cassie Coble was feeling it from the outside, as Patterson’s star hit five 3-pointers and nailed all five of her free throws in the Tigers’ (16-7, 9-2) 45-27 WAC win over Orestimba (15-9, 5-6). The Tigers led 29-16 at halftime, and maintained their defensive pressure throughout the second half.
First-place and No. 4 small-school Livingston (15-7, 10-1) pulled away in the fourth quarter to win a defensive struggle with Hilmar (11-12, 5-6), taking the WAC game 32-23 after Hilmar had taken a 14-13 lead into halftime. Maria Flores scored 15 points to account for nearly half of Livingston’s points.
All it took was one quarter for Central Catholic (11-13, 4-7) to establish its dominance over struggling Gustine (0-14, 0-11) on the way to a 55-27 WAC win. Briana Rios, who will soon be pitching for the Raiders’ softball team, scored 12 points and Taylor Hulsebosch added 11. The Raiders used a 15-1 second-quarter run for a 27-5 halftime lead, and Martina McQuown and Tiffany Morrison had 10 rebounds apiece.
SOUTHERN UPSET — No. 5 small-school Turlock Christian brought a nine-game winning streak and a perfect Southern League record into its battle with second-place Le Grand, but the Eagles left disappointed.
After a scoreless first period, Le Grand (14-8, 9-2) used an 18-8 second quarter on its way to a 40-35 upset of the No. 5 small-school Eagles (18-4, 9-1).
Veronica Moreno (12 points) and Cindy Wilson (10 points, 11 rebounds) helped Le Grand recover from its poor start, but the Bulldogs’ defense helped by holding TC to just two points in the opening quarter.
Waterford (10-7, 6-4) took advantage of its homecourt, and an 18-point night from Nycole McHenry, for a 49-41 SL win over Denair (8-15, 4-7). Brittney Hopper provided some punch from the perimeter, with two treys and 11 points.
BIRCHALL NOT ENOUGH — Madelyn Birchall did her best to keep Hughson in the game, but her 26-point, 16-rebound effort wasn’t enough to keep Ripon (13-9, 5-1) from pulling away in the fourth quarter to beat the Huskies (8-10, 3-3) 65-56 in the TVL.
Kendra Contente led the Indians with 23 points, while Rachel Rodriguez (13) and Lauren Fedderson (10) also helped turn a 42-39 deficit after three quarters into a nine-point win.
