A father is dead. A son is behind bars. And deputies are still trying to piece together what touched off a deadly fight in Waterford on Monday night.

Jose Eucebio Corona, 21, is in Stanislaus County Jail after being booked on homicide charges in connection with the death of his father, Tomas Botello Corona, 65, according to Deputy Andrew Winter.

The two began fighting in the front portion of their house at 509 Stein Way at about 6:30 p.m. It ended minutes later, and when deputies arrived, they found the dad lying unconscious in the driveway and his son being detained by neighbors across the street.

Winter said the mother was in a back room in the house when she heard the commotion and immediately ran out of the residence to ask neighbors to call 9-1-1.

Tomas Corona sustained serious head injuries and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Winter would not comment on how those injuries occurred. He would only rule out the use of a gun.

Winter said investigators haven’t determined what caused the fight, adding that the two were already fighting before the mom figured out what was going on.

Investigators are trying to determine whether drugs played a role in the son’s actions, Winter said.
