NEWMAN — Police arrested an Orestimba High School teacher suspected of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl enrolled at the school.
Daniel John Burgin, 36, of Newman, was arrested Friday night on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse and oral copulation of a minor, according to Newman police.
The investigation began Friday after the parents learned Burgin was having a sexual relationship with their daughter, who is a senior at the high school, said Newman police Chief Adam McGill.
The parents immediately reported the allegations to police. After an initial investigation, officers arrested Burgin shortly before 9 p.m. at his home.
According to the school’s Web site, Burgin is a U.S. history teacher at Orestimba High. It was unclear, however, whether the girl was a student in one of his classes.
Newman police declined to release any further information about the ongoing investigation.
Orestimba High is part of the Newman-Crows Landing Unified School District and has about 750 students from Newman, Crows Landing, and other surrounding areas including Diablo Grande, according to the school’s Web site.
